Families and friends bask in the sun at Coronado Beach after its reopening.
Coronado’s beautiful beaches have officially reopened as of April 21, 2025, after concerns over elevated bacteria levels due to the Tijuana sewage crisis. The closures began on April 12, but following successful remediation efforts, access has returned. Despite the reopening, there are ongoing water quality concerns. Authorities urge beachgoers to remain cautious and informed about safety updates. Coronado Beach, recognized as one of the top beaches in the U.S., offers a vibrant destination for locals and visitors alike.
Hey there, beach lovers! Great news coming out of Coronado! All the beautiful beaches in this picturesque seaside town have officially reopened as of the evening of April 21, 2025. It’s been a bit of a bumpy ride lately with some water concerns, but you can now spread your towels and enjoy the sun once again!
These closures started a bit earlier, with the southern beaches, including the much-loved Silver Strand Shoreline and Coronado Beach at Avenida Lunar, closing their gates on April 12, 2025. Not long after, the northernmost stretch of Coronado Beach followed suit on April 13, 2025. The reason? There were elevated levels of bacteria in the water, which were linked back to the ongoing Tijuana sewage crisis.
The situation took a turn for the better when an update on April 20, 2025, revealed that Coronado’s beaches were officially off the county’s closure list. But hold on a second—before everyone rushes back to the water, let’s take a look at how we got here.
So, it all started when Mexico began diverting between 3 to 5 million gallons of untreated wastewater into the Tijuana River on April 8, 2025. This diversion is part of a major effort called Mexico’s International Collector project, aimed at addressing sewage management more efficiently. Thankfully, by April 15, 2025, reports showed that the flow of wastewater into the Tijuana River was zero, which is fantastic news.
Now, here’s where things get a bit dicey. Despite reopening, results from water tests conducted on April 16, 2025, detected a high level of Enterococcus bacteria (a staggering 9,160 Copies/100ml) at Avenida Lunar, raising red flags for water safety. However, the authorities decided to allow the Coronado Village beaches to resume operation on April 22, 2025, though this decision came with its share of worries since no new test results were available since April 16.
On a side note, the Silver Strand Guard Shack beach still remains closed because there have been no fresh test results since that last update. So, folks, it’s best to keep an eye on updates if you’re planning to hit the waves.
This sewage crisis isn’t isolated just to Coronado. In fact, Imperial Beach has been enduring over 1,000 days of closures due to similar water quality concerns. Let’s not forget that Coronado also had a rough stretch recently, with water contact closures lasting for 169 days between June 3, 2023, and June 3, 2024, heavily impacting beachgoers.
Mayor Richard Bailey, along with other mayors in the San Diego County area, has called for a state of emergency to tackle this looming sewage crisis head-on. And it’s not just local leaders noticing the importance of Coronado Beach; it has repeatedly been recognized as one of the best beaches in the U.S. In fact, it nabbed the No. 5 spot on USA Today’s list of the Golden State’s top 10 beaches in 2024!
Plus, the annual roundup by Dr. Beach also included Coronado Beach in its top 10 list, highlighting the beach’s fantastic outdoor recreational opportunities. Sounds like a little piece of paradise, right?
However, it’s essential to note that earlier research detected unhealthy levels of hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen cyanide in the Tijuana River Valley, which raised some eyebrows about air quality. But officials have assured everyone that the air quality remains safe for all activities.
All in all, it’s a welcome sight to see Coronado Beach back in action. With its glittering sands and convenient proximity to historical landmarks like the stunning Hotel del Coronado, it’s an easy choice for a day out. Just make sure to be mindful of water safety updates and enjoy the warm sun as you dip your toes in that lovely Californian surf!
