What’s the Buzz About the IBSA World Tour Final?

This marks the second annual Bodysurfing World Tour Final hosted by IBSA, and it’s shaping up to be quite the spectacle! Only the top 12 men and top 6 women from five regions around the world qualify for this prestigious competition based on their stellar performances in regional contests. And guess what? Pat Byron clinched his spot by showcasing his skills at the Steamers Lane Bodysurf Contest in Santa Cruz earlier this January and the Ventura Bodysurfing Classic in November 2023!

A Bit About Pat Byron’s Journey

So, who is Pat Byron? Growing up in Virginia, he was a competitive swimmer before he stepped into the exciting world of bodysurfing at the age of 12 while visiting family in Dana Point, California. His family had a strong surf culture, with uncles and cousins who preferred riding the waves. But Pat had his own style, preferring to catch waves while wearing fins—talk about a unique twist!

His passion for bodysurfing really took off during his military deployments where he had the chance to explore surf spots around the world. Although he didn’t jump into competitions until he was stationed in Hawaii, he dove headfirst into the Pipeline bodysurfing competition and began to develop a love for bigger waves along the way. His top three bodysurfing locations include Black’s Beach, Pipeline, and Tijuana Sloughs, each known for their colossal waves, which he absolutely thrives on!

Challenges on the Waves

Speaking of Tijuana Sloughs, Byron highlights the importance of addressing the sewage issues that can affect water quality, emphasizing that while currents play a role, more needs to be done about pollution. It’s clear that the ocean is his playground, and he holds a deep respect for keeping it clean and safe for all to enjoy.

About the International Bodysurfing Association

Founded in 2018, the International Bodysurfing Association (IBSA) has been working hard to promote the sport of bodysurfing, focusing on the values of sharing, awareness, and respect for our oceans and beaches. By revitalizing the bodysurfing community, IBSA aims to foster friendships, healthy competition, and ocean advocacy, making it a great time to be involved in this thrilling sport!

A Marine Legacy

As the son of a Marine, Pat Byron has continued a family tradition of military service, dedicating 30 years to the U.S. Marine Corps before retiring at Naval Amphibious Base in Coronado. His daughter, Helen, graduated from Coronado High School in 2020, and after spending glorious years in Hawaii, Pat settled on the mainland to remain close to the ocean and engage in his beloved bodysurfing.

Wrap Up

With all his achievements and dedicated journey, Pat Byron represents not just himself but our whole Coronado community at the upcoming World Tour Final. Get ready for some intense competition and show your support for our local hero as he rides the waves down under! Interested in following the event?
