The San Diego Toreros celebrate their impressive victory during a recent game.
The San Diego Toreros softball team celebrated a remarkable weekend by sweeping the Western Coast Conference weekly awards. Pitcher McKenna Braegelmann made history with a no-hitter, while Joecellia Roberts showcased her batting prowess, leading the team to a series of impressive victories against Loyola Marymount University. This win marks their second sweep of the season, solidifying their position as a top contender in the conference as they look forward to their next challenge against Oregon State.
In an exciting twist of fate, the San Diego Toreros softball team is basking in the glory of an incredible weekend after sweeping the Western Coast Conference (WCC) weekly awards! The dynamic duo of McKenna Braegelmann and Joecellia Roberts is the talk of the town, showcasing their exceptional talents and leading the team to victory during their three-game series against Loyola Marymount University (LMU).
Graduate student pitcher McKenna Braegelmann has made history with a phenomenal no-hitter, becoming just the seventh player in the school’s history to achieve this impressive feat. She lit up the field with a stunning performance that included six scoreless innings and four strikeouts, leading to a resounding 9-0 win against LMU. Over the weekend, Braegelmann continued to shine bright, completing a total of 13 innings and boasting a remarkable 1.62 ERA while only allowing a minuscule .116 batting average against her.
In the closing game on Sunday, Braegelmann put in a complete effort, allowing five hits and three earned runs, which still led to a 6-4 victory for the Toreros. Impressively, this is her second career WCC Pitcher of the Week award, previously earning the honor earlier this season. Having proven herself time and time again, Braegelmann is quickly becoming a cornerstone for the team.
Meanwhile, it was Joecellia Roberts who stole the spotlight at the plate, showing off her batting prowess all weekend long. Roberts flaunted a spectacular slash line of .571/.667/1.429, demonstrating her ability to hit and get on base at critical moments. In the opening game, she contributed a two-run triple, even though the Toreros fell in that matchup. However, she redeemed herself in the second game, going 1-for-3, helping the team secure their footing.
The series finale saw Roberts really step up her game, delivering a remarkable 2-for-3 performance. This included a jaw-dropping solo home run, a double, and even a walk, marking her pivotal role in the team’s victory. With two home runs this season, Roberts has now tied for second on the team’s roster in that department. This is a significant achievement as she earns her second career Player of the Week honor, further cementing her position as one of the top players in the conference.
This marks the second time this season that the Toreros have swept the WCC weekly awards, celebrating the incredible talents of Braegelmann and Roberts alongside teammates Taylor Johnson and Kelsey Tadlock, who previously received honors earlier in March. Their hard work and dedication are paving the way for a bright future, and the excitement around the team continues to build.
The Toreros are not done yet! They are gearing up for another thrilling challenge as they host a series against Oregon State starting on Friday, April 19, at 3:00 p.m. at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex. Fans are encouraged to join in on the excitement, and those interested in attending can find ticket links on the team’s schedule page.
