Coronado young athletes celebrating their new uniforms on the beach.
Coronado, a vibrant beachside town, celebrates the Islander Sports Foundation’s continued support for local student-athletes. The Coronado High School Girls’ Lacrosse team has received brand-new uniforms, boosting morale and team spirit. Founded in 1994, ISF supports athletic programs from sixth grade through high school and club sports. With new leadership and ongoing fundraising, ISF aims to meet the growing needs of athletic programs. As CHS sports teams excel, the community rallies behind these young athletes, ensuring they have the resources to thrive in their sporting endeavors.
Coronado, a beautiful beachside town, is buzzing with excitement as the Islander Sports Foundation (ISF) continues its amazing support for local student-athletes. Just recently, the Coronado High School Girls’ Lacrosse team received brand-new uniforms that have not only boosted their morale but also strengthened their team spirit. This improvement is just a small part of what ISF has been doing for the athletic programs in the Coronado schools.
Founded in 1994, ISF has been dedicated to supporting athletic programs across Coronado schools. The foundation’s mission has recently broadened its scope, now supporting student-athletes from as young as sixth grade right through high school. It even extends its assistance to local club sports, providing resources and materials to enhance the athletic experience at every level.
Kris Collins has taken on the role of president of ISF, stepping into this position after contributing as a booster liaison on the board. She now leads a committed team of approximately 15 board members and six student representatives, who play a vital role in connecting their schools with the foundation. Together, they work alongside the Coronado Unified School District (CUSD) and athletic directors at Coronado High School (CHS) and Coronado Middle School (CMS) to ensure that student-athletes have the resources they need to thrive.
The value of athletic programs goes beyond just competing in sports. Athletic Director Aaron Brooks stresses that these programs help students forge important social connections and develop life skills such as time management and leadership. As students juggle academics and sports, they learn vital lessons that will benefit them beyond high school.
As the world of sports evolves, so do the financial demands of athletic programs. For this reason, funding needs have noticeably increased, driven by the rising expectations in sports technology and competition standards. ISF is actively engaged in various fundraising initiatives to meet these needs, including popular events like the Crown City Classic Fourth of July run and the ever-fun Valentine’s Day run.
Excitingly, almost every CHS sports team has made it to the post-season playoffs this year, continuing the momentum from a stellar previous year where four teams clinched CIF championships. The foundation aims to provide essential equipment for all 24 sports teams, which is projected to cost over $100,000. Each penny is a step closer to ensuring every athlete has what they need to excel.
On the aquatic front, the Coronado swimming team is making waves with impressive finishes. The boys’ team delivered an outstanding performance, pulling off a win against Point Loma. The girls’ team, while facing a tough competition, showcased strong individual efforts with young swimmers like Chloe Quarles and Ally Fabrey finishing well. The junior varsity teams, both boys and girls, are also shining brightly in their competitions, building confidence for future events.
Looking ahead, there are plenty of thrilling meets on the horizon, including an upcoming swim meet against Patrick Henry. The energy in Coronado is palpable as athletes and their supporters rally together, united by a shared passion for sports and building lasting memories.
With ongoing support from ISF and strong performances from the athletes, the future looks bright for Coronado’s student-athletes. The community stands strong behind its young talents, aware that behind every uniform is a story of teamwork, dedication, and a love for the game.
