In the vibrant city of Lubbock, basketball enthusiasts are buzzing with excitement following the recent announcements made by the Lubbock Independent School District (ISD). The district has introduced two new head coaches who are set to steer the basketball programs at Coronado and Lubbock High Schools into a bright future: Katie Ferrell and Jose Perez.
First up is Katie Ferrell, the newly appointed head girls basketball coach for Coronado High School. Ferrell, who boasts an impressive track record as a player, had a standout career at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). During her time there from 2019 to 2022, she showcased her talent on the court as a four-year starter, participating in 112 games and starting 98 of them! Talk about dedication!
Her performance was nothing short of stellar as she ranked in the top 10 for four major statistical categories and finished her collegiate career with the second-most assists in UTA history. The basketball world was abuzz with her skills, especially when she received the First Team All-Defense honors from Dave Campbell’s Texas Basketball last year.
In her most recent season, Ferrell played for Texas Tech, contributing significantly to a remarkable 20-win season and helping the team earn a spot in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). She’s already made quite an impact in the high school coaching scene, set to bring her competitive edge and extensive knowledge of the game to Coronado. With her impressive accolades, Ferrell is poised to raise the bar for the girls’ program.
As for the boys’ basketball program, Lubbock High School welcomes back one of its own. Jose Perez, a proud graduate of Lubbock High, is stepping in as the new head coach with a wealth of experience. Perez is no stranger to success, with six years of coaching under his belt, including a noteworthy stint at Estacado High School where he played a crucial role in leading the Matadors to multiple district and area championships.
His impressive coaching repertoire also includes steering the Estacado team to a thrilling UIL State Semifinals appearance in 2025. It’s evident that Perez has a knack for spotting talent and fostering it into strong competitive teams. As he returns to his roots, he brings with him a passion for basketball that is infectious.
Perez is well-rounded in his coaching capabilities, having acquired experience across various levels within Lubbock ISD and Petersburg ISD, not just in basketball but in several sports. He has spent over a decade coaching AAU basketball, emphasizing the importance of mental toughness and discipline—two critical qualities that can propel young athletes toward success.
When Perez isn’t busy on the court, he finds joy in spending quality time with his three sons, Jaden, Jordan, and Jaylon. As a father, he cherishes moments spent playing sports and bonding with his family. His commitment to both coaching and family makes him a relatable figure to student-athletes and the community alike.
With the dynamic leadership of Katie Ferrell and Jose Perez, the future of Lubbock High School and Coronado’s basketball programs appears increasingly promising. Both coaches bring a unique blend of experience, enthusiasm, and dedication that is sure to inspire players and elevate the teams’ standings in the coming seasons.
Lubbock basketball fans should prepare for an action-packed season filled with energy, excitement, and of course, a whole lot of love for the game. Bring on the hoops!
