The San Diego State women's basketball team in action, showcasing teamwork and skill.
San Diego State women’s basketball has welcomed Veronica Sheffey as a new point guard. Previously contributing at the University of San Diego, Sheffey brings impressive stats to SDSU, including leading her former team in scoring and assists. With a solid basketball background and family legacy, Sheffey looks to enhance the Aztecs’ roster alongside other new talents for the upcoming season.
Excitement is buzzing around the San Diego State women’s basketball program as they officially welcomed the dynamic Veronica Sheffey as the latest addition to their team. This savvy point guard comes from the University of San Diego, where she made quite a name for herself over the last two seasons.
Standing tall at 5’9″, Sheffey brings a wealth of experience to the court, especially after her impressive sophomore season where she started all 31 games. This past year, she showed her versatility and skill by leading the Toreros in both scoring and assists, averaging a solid 12.2 points per game and 5.1 assists per game. Out of all the players in the West Coast Conference (WCC), she ranked third in assists, proving that she knows how to maneuver the game well.
Sheffey’s numbers tell a remarkable story. She dominated the assists game with an impressive assist-to-turnover ratio of +1.4. Defensive stats weren’t lacking either, with an average of 1.5 steals per game. When it comes to clutch moments at the free-throw line, she was a force to be reckoned with, making 98 of 133 attempts. Scoring wasn’t a problem for Sheffey, as she managed to hit double digits in 22 of the 31 games. Perhaps most notably, she scored a career-high of 23 points against the Aztecs, where she also dished out a tie-personal best of eight assists.
Before making waves at USD, Veronica was a standout at Sno-King Academy in Washington. She was not just a player; her talents earned her the title of 2022 4A State Player and State Championship MVP after helping her team clinch the state title. During her high school career, she didn’t just shine individually—she contributed to her school’s incredible success, winning three KingCo titles and three district championships. To top it off, she scored more than 1,000 points during her time in high school.
On a personal note, Sheffey’s family has a rich sports background. Her father, Tyrone, played football at the University of Washington, and her brother Jaden also played football at George Fox University before transferring to Washington. Adding to this impressive family legacy, her grandmother, Gloria Mercer, played basketball at Seattle University. It’s clear that athletic talent runs deep in the Sheffey family.
As Sheffey gears up to don the Aztecs’ jersey next season, she won’t be alone. She will join an exciting roster along with five other newcomers, including transfer Cali Clark from Colorado State and freshmen Bailey Barnhard, Kaelyn Hamilton, Natalia Martinez, and Naomi Panganiban. This new wave of talent has fans eager to see what the upcoming season holds.
With head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson at the helm and the addition of players like Veronica Sheffey, the San Diego State women’s basketball program seems to be headed in a promising direction. Looking ahead, fans and supporters can definitely expect thrilling performances and unbeatable camaraderie on the court.
