Coronado Gears Up for Spectacular 2025 GEM Awards Dinner Ceremony

Mark your calendars, Coronado! The highly anticipated GEM Awards Dinner Ceremony is just around the corner, scheduled for Thursday, March 27, 2025, at 5:00 PM. This exciting event will unfold in the charming Nautilus Room, where community members will come together to celebrate some remarkable individuals and families dedicated to the preservation of Coronado’s rich historical heritage.

What Are the GEM Awards?

Since their inception in 2013, the GEM Awards have recognized those who go above and beyond in the effort to safeguard Coronado’s unique architectural character. The awards honor property owners who choose renovation over replacement, making a substantial commitment to maintaining the town’s historic buildings.

This year, the Coronado Historical Association (CHA) is excited to unveil the winners of the 2025 GEM Awards during the ceremony. It’s all part of a week-by-week build-up to the awards night, where CHA highlights the nominees leading up to the big event. This week features two amazing contenders ready to show off their stunning renovations.

Spotlight on This Week’s Nominees

First up, we have the enchanting property located at 555 Alameda Boulevard. This charming English cottage is one of the few remaining Storybook Tudor homes in Coronado, originally built in 1938. The current owners took a leap of faith and purchased the home in 2022. Following a full renovation, they successfully restored its architectural integrity, making it a true gem of the community. This impressive restoration included substituting vinyl windows with custom wood ones that faithfully match the original design. In a delightful twist, the distinctive green-painted roof over the bay window was refinished in copper, revealing its original color during the restoration process.

Next, we turn our attention to the delightful residence at 975 B Avenue, which boasts a fascinating history. This home was constructed in 1913 for a mere $800 by carpenter Leonard Brown. Originally situated at 452 B Avenue, it was relocated to its current site in 1989. The current homeowners acquired the property in 2007 and have been diligently improving and restoring it since then. The standout moment of their renovation came in 2021, as they focused on making the interior cozy for grandchildren while freshening up its exterior color. After some research, these homeowners opted for a lighter shade from the Benjamin Moore Historical Collection that beautifully honors the home’s early 20th-century style, moving away from the original avocado green hue. Their journey of renovation has truly been a labor of love!
